On September 9-10, India will be hosting this year's G20 Summit, an international gathering of leaders of top economies. On this occasion Razom We Stand, together with other Ukrainian NGOs and international partners, appeals publicly to the world's leaders with a demand for responsible and dignified actions: addressing the climate emergency, war crimes and violation of international law by tightening the sanctions against Russia.  

The EU should introduce and fully enforce the embargo on Russian liquefied natural gas in the 12th sanctions package.

This year, the British think tank Carbon Tracker plans to launch a global energy data portal and new ratings and indicators tool for policy makers, financials and industry—the Financial Energy Transition index (FETi). FETi is designed to track and measure the credibility of country-specific energy transition actions and plans. It will create actionable indicators and set standards to forward the energy transition, particularly for economies stuck in transition.

Trends in Europe's use of Russian Liquefied natural gas (LNG), continue to impress. And not in a positive way. 

EU countries, led by Belgium, France, and Spain, have imported Russian LNG representing approximately $20 billion in revenue, since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Razom We Stand strongly condemns the global push for gas infrastructure expansion, including LNG terminals, given the dire environmental and climate consequences, as well as financial risks involved in creating stranded assets. With excess windfall profits stemming from market volatility worsened by Putin’s brutal invasion in Ukraine, the gas industry must be subject to taxation and regulation, not supported with public subsidies for their expansion plans.

Recently, on June 20, the European Union approved the long-awaited 11th package of sanctions against Russia, while omitting the embargo on russian LNG or even any mention of import restrictions.

A new study published by a research team of Ukrainian nationals and researchers from Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment shows that only 33% of spending in the National Recovery Plan, presented by the Ukrainian government in 2022 in Lugano, is likely to support climate mitigation outcomes, well below the 42% European average of state funding deployed to support economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ukraine Recovery Conference, which took place on 21-22 June 2023 in London, a continuation of its predecessor - the URC 2022 in Lugano, gathered many times more participants and friends of Ukraine who are ready to work together to rebuild it after the war. A spectacular 1,000 public and private sector decision makers attended, from 59 countries, 33 international organisations, over 400 businesses and 130 civil society organisations.

During a high-profile conference on Ukraine's recovery in London, the European Union approved the long-awaited 11th package of sanctions against Russia. EU ambassadors struggled for weeks to reach a consensus, especially for Greece and Hungary to support the final agreement. 

On June 21-22 London held a major Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC-2023) with discussion and decisions on multi-billion investments in Ukraine. In the run up and at the URC-2023, representatives of Ukrainian Civil Society Organisations alongside British religious leaders – including former Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Rowan Williams and Jonathan Wittenberg, Rabbi of New North London Synagogue – appealed to decision-makers and the business community, who gathered at URC-2023 to ensure that the recovery is green, just, transparent and citizens-lead.

Artists and environmental activists have created a large mural depicting a peaceful, green future for Ukraine outside a major international conference to discuss the country’s reconstruction in London.

On June 20th, Razom We Stand with the support from London Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a high-level side event in London, featuring a dozen speakers, which showcased Ukraine's vast renewable energy potential. The Ukraine Recovery Conference is dedicated to Ukraine's transformation and was symbolically launched in London in 2017 as the Ukraine Reform Conference.

The URC 2023 will focus on mobilising international support for Ukraine's economic and social stabilisation and recovery from the effects of war, including through emergency assistance for immediate needs and financing private sector participation in the reconstruction process.

International conferences aimed at supporting reforms in Ukraine have been held on an annual basis since 2017. The Ukraine Reform Conference is an annual high-level political event held in the UK, Canada, Denmark and Lithuania that allows Ukraine to highlight its reforms progress and discuss the next reform priorities.  
However, Russia's war against Ukraine has raised a number of issues that need to be addressed. To this end, the international community has come together to create a platform for discussing Ukraine's recovery.

Monitoring of recorded losses from the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP (as of 09 June 2023)

The latest war crime committed by russian terrorists involved blowing up the Kakhovka dam on Tuesday 6th of June, leaving an enormous environmental catastrophe. According to official information 30 towns and villages in Kherson region have been flooded, supply of freshwater and electricity have been disrupted. In addition the region is under constant shelling by the russian army.

Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up the massive Kakhovka dam, which provides water to a large number of civilians, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, and will flood huge territories. The local mayor has defined the event as a “terrorist act”. Also lost is one of major sources of clean renewable energy for Ukraine, which has already had roughly half of its energy infrastructure destroyed by russia.

G7 leaders pledge billions of aid to Ukraine with one hand, and continue zealously buying Russian fossil fuels with the other. The geopolitical landscape is now more than ever under the control of natural gas. The G7 Hiroshima Summit, which took place from May 19th to 21st, has only further confirmed that the worldwide addiction to fossil gas is the most challenging to eradicate on a global scale.

The Climate Strategies organization released a groundbreaking report titled "Unveiling the True Potential: A Closer Look at Kuzbass and the russian Coal Sector," highlighting the tangible impact of targeted sanctions on russia's economy, as demonstrated by the successful coal embargo.

The G7 Summit of the world's richest countries was held last weekend, May 19 to 21 in Hiroshima, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida's hometown. He chose Hiroshima as the Summit location because of his view that Hiroshima is "the most fitting location to express Japan’s commitment to peace." While G7 host Japan built up hope for progress on peace, especially related to Ukraine, the fact is that many were disappointed with backsliding in G7 final commitments.

Due to significant capital costs for construction, the long term (7-10 years) for commissioning and the constant unpredictable increase in the cost of nuclear power generation projects, it loses its competitiveness with other types of electricity generation, and this is important to consider during the post-war recovery of Ukraine.

15 May, 2023 // Kyiv, Ukraine // As Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrives in London today for talks with UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, the Ukrainian Climate organization Razom We Stand is pulling the alarm on dangerous Russian trade exemptions being proposed by the G7, Reports today in Reuters highlight that there are many gaps in the sanctions regime, that G7 nations have been approving many sanctions "exceptions", and that the sanctions today "...allow all goods to be sold to Russia unless they are explicitly blacklisted."

The G7 summit is approaching, and Razom We Stand, a Ukrainian NGO, has sent letters urging the G7 nations to take the lead in transitioning the world towards clean energy and away from fossil fuels. We demand that the G7 takes action on climate change and addresses the ongoing war in Ukraine, where the Russian military, funded by fossil fuel export revenues from G7 and other nations, are inflicting war crimes on innocent people.

On May 2, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law on amendments to some laws of Ukraine regarding the restoration and green transformation of the energy system of Ukraine in the first reading, signaling a positive step towards achieving the country's renewable energy goals.

On the anniversary of Russia's fossil-fueled invasion of Ukraine, which is trying to destroy the democratic system in the world and disrupt the development of renewable energy sources, provoking significant energy poverty and further exposing most vulnerable people to adverse impacts of climate change, Razom We Stand launched in Ukraine Re-energy Network.

At the bilateral conference on Ukraine reconstruction in Rome Svitlana Romanko discussed with Ukrainian officials and international experts practical steps to enable deployment of clean energy solutions for reconstruction of Ukraine’s power system, which was heavily damaged by russia. On Saturday 22 April 2023, the annual International Journalism Festival took place in Perugia, Italy. Svitlana Romanko participated at the panel discussion "Follow the oil: Tracking flows of fossil fuels in wartime russia" on the topic of the investigation, data collection and strategic litigation against European energy companies involved in oil and gas projects in russia, in particular Total Energies and Wintershall Dea.

On April 22, the Earth Day 2023, Svitlana Romanko, the strong voice of Ukrainian civil society and advocate for climate action joins the call of global environmental movement to the world’s political and business leaders to invest strategically in a clean energy future.

The annual Earth Day, a celebration of the beginning of the modern environmental movement, is taking place this Saturday 22 April, 2023. Ukrainian Climate organization Razom We Stand is pulling the alarm on dangerous practices being proposed by the G7, as the annual G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment meets this coming weekend.

The annual G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment is this coming weekend, and climate experts are watching with concern. Especially problematic is Japan’s toxic new so-called “Green Transformation (GX)” policy, which is soaked in fossil fuels. Such worrying proposals put out by Japan as G7 President are clashing with messages from civil society leaders, who are calling for action.

To turn words into action Ukrainian campaigning group Razom We Stand urges the Austrian government to immediately act to tighten and fully enforce the full and transparent embargo on Russian fossil fuels. 

The Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has conducted a study on Ukraine's post-war recovery, presenting two potential scenarios. The first scenario involves restoring the pre-war fossil fuel-based economic model, while the second scenario is focused on achieving complete decarbonization of the economy by 2050, in line with the European Green Deal.

As Ukraine's application for EU candidacy is being fast-tracked, and the EU is scrambling to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the move to have Ukraine comply with environmental accounting standards (GHG protocol and SBTi) and make data on  GHG emissions public is vital. Only with such measures can Ukraine and the EU meet recommendations of the UN IPCC scientific report this week.

Little known but very concerning is the fact that in 2022 Russian liquified natural gas production grew by 8% and Russia, contrary to the sanctions, has expanded shipments of LNG to Europe and is building another LNG terminal in the Arctic. And this in part is facilitated by western firms. Russia is still exporting 10 TWh to 15 TWh per month of LNG to the EU. This is not subject to sanctions but could be cut unilaterally by Russia any time.

In 2022, as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU reduced its demand for energy, especially for gas, and maintained its course of abandoning coal. At the same time, the transition to renewable energy sources accelerated - in 2022, wind and solar generated a record fifth, or 22% of electricity in the EU. According to Ember analysts, this year's demand for fossil fuels in the EU may decrease by 20%, which is twice the previous record of 2020.

While CERAWeek 2023 has the motto: "Navigating a Turbulent World: Energy, Climate and Security", nowhere is it mentioned in the agenda that actually energy self-reliance, based on decentralized clean energy, is the best way for a country to achieve energy security. 

The oil cap for Russian oil is not working: compliance is not enforced, sanctions are violated, and Russia still earns approximately 560 million euros daily from fossil fuel exports, with the European shipping industry still being the primary source of this income. There is no other way to stop the war: a full embargo on Russian oil and gas is needed, now.

Kyiv, Ukraine - One year into the fight, and the world is looking for solutions instead of continual reports of war. But now a ray of light is offered by a new 5-point "Manifesto for a New Ukraine and a New World", launched by Ukrainian group Razom We Stand. The lofty goal? To end the war by drying up putin's war machine with a new global campaign for a full embargo on exports of all Russian fossil fuels and accelerated clean energy transition.

One year on from Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the price cap on Russian oil isn’t working. Governments should scrap the cap and institute a ban on the trade of Russian oil.  

Kyiv, 23 February 2023 // RAZOM WE STAND, a non-governmental organization that internationally demands a full and comprehensive embargo on Russian fossil fuels, a seizure of funds and assets of the Russian fossil fuel industry and their use as a source of funding for the green reconstruction of Ukraine, is launching the RE-Energy Communications Network. This is an open informal platform for interaction of all actors working on solutions for energy independence of Ukraine and Europe, a transition to clean energy and countering Russia's energy terror.

In the first days of the horrific russian invasion of Ukraine, Svitlana Romanko, Ukrainian environmental lawyer and climate campaigner, was driven to establish the Stand With Ukraine campaign on March 4, 2022. This campaign launched with a letter demanding that world leaders end the global fossil fuel addiction that finances putin’s war.
