Today, during President Zelensky's visit to France, Ukrainian climate expert Svitlana Romanko criticized President Macron for France's continued LNG purchases from Russia. 

Svitlana Romanko, Founder and Director of Razom We Stand stated, "Macron’s words of support to Ukraine sound like nothing more than hypocrisy as he continues to do business with Russia, import its LNG gas and send millions to fill Putin’s war chest, thereby funding the deaths of innocent Ukrainians."  

"This visit underscores the urgent need for Europe to align its energy policies with its geopolitical commitments, ensuring no inadvertent support for Russian aggression, which has already taken out half of Ukraine’s power generation, leaving thousands without electricity."

Recent data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) highlights France's rapid growth in Russian LNG imports, with payments totalling 600 million euros in the first three months of 2024 alone. France has emerged as the fastest-growing consumer of Russian LNG in the EU, surpassing all other EU countries in LNG imports from Russia during this period. France led in both the volume and growth of Russian LNG imports in 2024, with a total of 1.5 million tonnes. Significant imports underscore the need for immediate action to curb reliance on Russian energy resources.
