A new study published by a research team of Ukrainian nationals and researchers from Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment shows that only 33% of spending in the National Recovery Plan, presented by the Ukrainian government in 2022 in Lugano, is likely to support climate mitigation outcomes, well below the 42% European average of state funding deployed to support economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 21-22 London held a major Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC-2023) with discussion and decisions on multi-billion investments in Ukraine. In the run up and at the URC-2023, representatives of Ukrainian Civil Society Organisations alongside British religious leaders – including former Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Rowan Williams and Jonathan Wittenberg, Rabbi of New North London Synagogue – appealed to decision-makers and the business community, who gathered at URC-2023 to ensure that the recovery is green, just, transparent and citizens-lead.

Artists and environmental activists have created a large mural depicting a peaceful, green future for Ukraine outside a major international conference to discuss the country’s reconstruction in London.

Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up the massive Kakhovka dam, which provides water to a large number of civilians, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, and will flood huge territories. The local mayor has defined the event as a “terrorist act”. Also lost is one of major sources of clean renewable energy for Ukraine, which has already had roughly half of its energy infrastructure destroyed by russia.

15 May, 2023 // Kyiv, Ukraine // As Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrives in London today for talks with UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, the Ukrainian Climate organization Razom We Stand is pulling the alarm on dangerous Russian trade exemptions being proposed by the G7, Reports today in Reuters highlight that there are many gaps in the sanctions regime, that G7 nations have been approving many sanctions "exceptions", and that the sanctions today "...allow all goods to be sold to Russia unless they are explicitly blacklisted."

On May 2, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law on amendments to some laws of Ukraine regarding the restoration and green transformation of the energy system of Ukraine in the first reading, signaling a positive step towards achieving the country's renewable energy goals.

At the bilateral conference on Ukraine reconstruction in Rome Svitlana Romanko discussed with Ukrainian officials and international experts practical steps to enable deployment of clean energy solutions for reconstruction of Ukraine’s power system, which was heavily damaged by russia. Razom We Stand also addressed these issues in letters sent to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov and Minister of Energy Herman Halushenko. 

On Saturday 22 April 2023, the annual International Journalism Festival took place in Perugia, Italy. Svitlana Romanko participated at the panel discussion "Follow the oil: Tracking flows of fossil fuels in wartime russia" on the topic of the investigation, data collection and strategic litigation against European energy companies involved in oil and gas projects in russia, in particular Total Energies and Wintershall Dea.

To turn words into action Ukrainian campaigning group Razom We Stand urges the Austrian government to immediately act to tighten and fully enforce the full and transparent embargo on Russian fossil fuels. 

The Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has conducted a study on Ukraine's post-war recovery, presenting two potential scenarios. The first scenario involves restoring the pre-war fossil fuel-based economic model, while the second scenario is focused on achieving complete decarbonization of the economy by 2050, in line with the European Green Deal.

As Ukraine's application for EU candidacy is being fast-tracked, and the EU is scrambling to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the move to have Ukraine comply with environmental accounting standards (GHG protocol and SBTi) and make data on  GHG emissions public is vital. Only with such measures can Ukraine and the EU meet recommendations of the UN IPCC scientific report this week.

In 2022, as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU reduced its demand for energy, especially for gas, and maintained its course of abandoning coal. At the same time, the transition to renewable energy sources accelerated - in 2022, wind and solar generated a record fifth, or 22% of electricity in the EU. According to Ember analysts, this year's demand for fossil fuels in the EU may decrease by 20%, which is twice the previous record of 2020.

In the first days of the horrific russian invasion of Ukraine, Svitlana Romanko, Ukrainian environmental lawyer and climate campaigner, was driven to establish the Stand With Ukraine campaign on March 4, 2022. This campaign launched with a letter demanding that world leaders end the global fossil fuel addiction that finances putin’s war.

Kyiv, Ukraine - As the tragic 1-year anniversary of russia's war comes on 24 February, Ukrainian Climate group Razom We Stand demands that concrete measures be taken to restrict exports of fossil fuels from the aggressor state and to keep russian oil and gas buried in the ground. The russian fossil fuel industry has to be eliminated from global markets in order to halt financial support for putin's war efforts. Specifically, weaknesses in existing embargoes and sanctions must be tightened.

Kyiv, Ukraine, 25 January 2023 // Ukrainian organisation Razom We Stand is alarmed and horrified to hear that German taxpayer money was used to underwrite German firm Wintershall Dea's investments in Russia, which likely ended up providing jet fuel components resulting in war crimes. The most recent shocking attack against Ukraine happened when Russian bombers destroyed civilian homes, killing 46 in Dnipro in a plane-launched missile attack on 14 January.

Paris, January 16, 2023 - On October 13, 2022, the undersigned, acting as Counsel to the DARWIN CLIMAX COALITION association and the Ukrainian organization RAZOM WE STAND, filed a complaint with the Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Paris Public Prosecutor's Office (under the International Crimes Unit) regarding acts of complicity in war crimes likely to have been committed by the company TOTAL ENERGIES EP RUSSIE in Ukraine.

HELSINKI / KYIV, 11 January 2023 — The EU ban on crude oil imports from Russia and the oil price cap are costing Russia an estimated EUR 160 mn/day, expected to rise to EUR 280 mn per day with additional measures that are being implemented by 5 February. To multiply impact the price cap needs to be revised down and enforcement of the embargo should be strengthened.

Razom We Stand is calling on European governments to eliminate loopholes and deliver strong and comprehensive enforcement of EU embargo and G7 price cap on Russian oil that entered into force on 5th December. This includes application of penalties to non-compliant ships and shipping companies as well as introduction of criminal liability for any attempts to circumvent sanctions applied to Russian fossil fuel exports.

November 18, 2022 // COP27, Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt // Climate campaigners including Svitlana Romanko from the Ukraine group Razom We Stand have left Egypt after having their UN COP27 badges suspended. The activists were disturbed to see an official Russian event at the COP27 summit, so they attended it, stating "Russia is guilty of war crimes". The activists were removed by security from the event on Tuesday and learned soon afterwards that their badges were suspended.

BERLIN, 25 October 2022 // Ahead of the International Expert Conference on the Recovery, Reconstruction and Modernization of Ukraine, climate justice campaigners are calling for a green reconstruction of Ukraine - an internationally assisted rapid transition away from fossil fuels in the process of relief and economic recovery.

BERLIN, 24 October 2022 // The Ukrainian NGOs “Ecoaction”, “Razom we Stand”, “Vision Zero”, and Greenpeace demand to put green recovery principles as the basis for the reconstruction of post-war Ukraine. That includes a transition to renewable energy, electric public transport and Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings as standard and no further investment in fossil fuels.

The human rights and climate justice Ukrainian group Razom We Stand and French organisation Darwin Climax Coalition filed a complaint before the Paris prosecutor against Total Energies for complicity of war crimes in Ukraine. The complaint follows the publication on August 24th, 2022 of an investigation conducted by British NGO Global Witness and French newspaper Le Monde.

Today Ukrainian climate activist group Razom We Stand is hitting out against the EU's continued involvement in global trade of Russian fossil fuels, which provides funding for Russia's military, including its ongoing recent threats of using nuclear weapons. Activists demand immediate sanctions on Russian oil and gas to be adopted at EU level and scaled up globally. 

Writing in advance of the EU energy ministers’ meeting on Friday, the campaigners say that Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine has made it clear that European money can no longer be used to fund Russia’s genocidal war. The open letter came as campaigners unveiled a billboard outside the European Parliament, clearly showing the link between Europe’s continued trade in Russian oil and the bloodshed in Ukraine.
