Open letter to G7 and European Union leaders

The potential candidate is responsible for campaign planning and execution in the area of ending fossil fuels addiction and building ground for accelerated renewable energy transition.

Since the onset of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has earned €121.845 billion from fossil gas exports and over €550 billion from all fossil fuel exports globally. These revenues serve as a financial lifeline sustaining conflicts and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

On September 9-10, India will be hosting this year's G20 Summit, an international gathering of leaders of top economies. On this occasion Razom We Stand, together with other Ukrainian NGOs and international partners, appeals publicly to the world's leaders with a demand for responsible and dignified actions: addressing the climate emergency, war crimes and violation of international law by tightening the sanctions against Russia.  

Ukraine should develop the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) according to the provisions of  Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action  as a EU membership candidate and party to the Energy Community Treaty. NECP should become the main document for directing reconstruction efforts and associated sectoral policies.

The Climate Strategies organization released a groundbreaking report titled "Unveiling the True Potential: A Closer Look at Kuzbass and the russian Coal Sector," highlighting the tangible impact of targeted sanctions on russia's economy, as demonstrated by the successful coal embargo.

The G7 Summit of the world's richest countries was held last weekend, May 19 to 21 in Hiroshima, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida's hometown. He chose Hiroshima as the Summit location because of his view that Hiroshima is "the most fitting location to express Japan’s commitment to peace." While G7 host Japan built up hope for progress on peace, especially related to Ukraine, the fact is that many were disappointed with backsliding in G7 final commitments.

Due to significant capital costs for construction, the long term (7-10 years) for commissioning and the constant unpredictable increase in the cost of nuclear power generation projects, it loses its competitiveness with other types of electricity generation, and this is important to consider during the post-war recovery of Ukraine.

The G7 summit is approaching, and Razom We Stand, a Ukrainian NGO, has sent letters urging the G7 nations to take the lead in transitioning the world towards clean energy and away from fossil fuels. We demand that the G7 takes action on climate change and addresses the ongoing war in Ukraine, where the Russian military, funded by fossil fuel export revenues from G7 and other nations, are inflicting war crimes on innocent people.

Today, in January 2023, after almost a year of grinding war in Europe, the German government is proud of the fact that it receives 0% of gas, 0% of oil and 0% of coal from Russia. French fossil fuel major Total Energies has announced cutting ties with Russian gas company Novatek. In its announcement on 9 December the company stated that it would take a $3.7 billion write-off on its stake in Russian group Novatek and withdraw its two members from the company's board.

Why is the gradual decrease of the price cap to $30 per barrel of Russian oil justified? Razom We Stand and the Centre for Energy and Clean Air Research - CREA (Finland) explain why the EU and G7 should be setting a price cap on Russian oil at a level no higher than $50-$60 from December 5 with a gradual decrease in the following months.

COP27 Global Gas and Oil Network Media Release

The failure to call for an equitable phase out of all fossil fuels at COP27 will mean more loss and damage in the world. A growing number of countries across all negotiating blocs called for a phase out of fossil fuels, while other countries blocked progress. Loss and damage and renewables gained momentum. The energy transition is underway, and the fossil fuel industry is on its way out. 

Razom We Stand made major advances towards our goals during COP27 in Sharm-El-Sheikh, with a number of high-impact events as payoff for effective team work. We are immensely grateful to partners, movements, networks and activists who supported our work at COP27.

Saturday was a day packed with actions for our team on the ground at COP27 today. A demonstration against fossil fuel financed war in Ukraine was set to be a highlight, but before that our Director Svitlana Romanko happened to meet Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, which was accused of complicity in Russian war crimes in Ukraine last month. 

70 members of the United for Ukraine inter-parliamentary network signed a joint statement: "A sustainable future for Ukraine - the new Marshall Plan". Among them are members of Ukraine's Parliament, MEPs and former leaders of European countries, experts and scientists.
