French fossil fuel major Total Energies has announced cutting ties with Russian gas company Novatek. In its announcement on 9 December the company stated that it would take a $3.7 billion write-off on its stake in Russian group Novatek and withdraw its two members from the company's board.

TotalEnergies, as a shareholder of “Novatek” company and the Thermokarstove gas field, which produced gas condensate used for the production of jet fuel at the Gazprom-owned Omsk Oil Refinery. Investigations showed this jet fuel was later supplied to Russian airbases and used by planes that bombarded Ukrainian cities. This became known after titanic investigative work done by Global Witness and Le Monde.

Building on that Razom We Stand and Darwin Climax Coalition issued to Paris anti-terrorist prosecutor criminal compliant on aiding and abetting war crimes under the French Criminal Code and Article 25 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Starting from 14 October 2022 the Paris special anti-terrorist prosecutor, who is in charge of investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity, considers the compliant for complicity of war crimes in Ukraine. The claim is based on the development of international and national law which provides that it is no longer necessary to share the main perpetrator’s intention to commit war crimes to be prosecuted for complicity in a war crime. The knowledge of that intention is enough.

We also challenged Total Energies at COP27, where there should have been no place for polluters. When faced with an unexpected question, Total's CEO Patrick Pouyanne said that he will "probably" use the Russian blood money to rebuild Ukraine.

We will continue to fight so that the Russian oil and gas industry finds itself in complete isolation, and the Kremlin loses all its streams of petrodollars, with which it finances the war in Ukraine.
