There is simply no excuse for Western governments not acting to defuse Russia's gas expansion in the Arctic.

In the wake of continuous pressure exerted by Razom We Stand, the week beginning September 11, 2023, witnessed encouraging developments from both the US State Department and the EU Commission in their pursuit of imposing further sanctions on Russian oil and gas.

In December 2022, UN Secretary-General António Guterres unveiled plans to host the UN Climate Ambition Summit in September 2023, two months prior COP28 in UAE.

This year, the British think tank Carbon Tracker plans to launch a global energy data portal and new ratings and indicators tool for policy makers, financials and industry—the Financial Energy Transition index (FETi). FETi is designed to track and measure the credibility of country-specific energy transition actions and plans. It will create actionable indicators and set standards to forward the energy transition, particularly for economies stuck in transition.

Trends in Europe's use of Russian Liquefied natural gas (LNG), continue to impress. And not in a positive way. 

EU countries, led by Belgium, France, and Spain, have imported Russian LNG representing approximately $20 billion in revenue, since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A few months ago, at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, the European Union announced huge financial support for Ukraine for the period 2024-2027 to help the country recover from the devastating effects of the war.

Razom We Stand (formerly #StandWithUkraine campaign) seeks a Communication Specialist with a primary focus on traditional media to increase the campaign’s exposure in the press, play a supporting role in its social media growth, and boost overall reach of campaign activities.

Razom We Stand strongly condemns the global push for gas infrastructure expansion, including LNG terminals, given the dire environmental and climate consequences, as well as financial risks involved in creating stranded assets. With excess windfall profits stemming from market volatility worsened by Putin’s brutal invasion in Ukraine, the gas industry must be subject to taxation and regulation, not supported with public subsidies for their expansion plans.

Recently, on June 20, the European Union approved the long-awaited 11th package of sanctions against Russia, while omitting the embargo on russian LNG or even any mention of import restrictions.

The Ukraine Recovery Conference, which took place on 21-22 June 2023 in London, a continuation of its predecessor - the URC 2022 in Lugano, gathered many times more participants and friends of Ukraine who are ready to work together to rebuild it after the war. A spectacular 1,000 public and private sector decision makers attended, from 59 countries, 33 international organisations, over 400 businesses and 130 civil society organisations.

During a high-profile conference on Ukraine's recovery in London, the European Union approved the long-awaited 11th package of sanctions against Russia. EU ambassadors struggled for weeks to reach a consensus, especially for Greece and Hungary to support the final agreement. 

On June 20th, Razom We Stand with the support from London Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a high-level side event in London, featuring a dozen speakers, which showcased Ukraine's vast renewable energy potential. Event entitled "Strategic Deployment of Renewable Energy in Ukraine: Investing in Energy Security" took place in the run up to the highly anticipated Ukraine Recovery Conference 2023 (URC-2023).

The Ukraine Recovery Conference is dedicated to Ukraine's transformation and was symbolically launched in London in 2017 as the Ukraine Reform Conference.

The URC 2023 will focus on mobilising international support for Ukraine's economic and social stabilisation and recovery from the effects of war, including through emergency assistance for immediate needs and financing private sector participation in the reconstruction process.

International conferences aimed at supporting reforms in Ukraine have been held on an annual basis since 2017. The Ukraine Reform Conference is an annual high-level political event held in the UK, Canada, Denmark and Lithuania that allows Ukraine to highlight its reforms progress and discuss the next reform priorities.  
However, Russia's war against Ukraine has raised a number of issues that need to be addressed. To this end, the international community has come together to create a platform for discussing Ukraine's recovery.

The latest war crime committed by russian terrorists involved blowing up the Kakhovka dam on Tuesday 6th of June, leaving an enormous environmental catastrophe. According to official information 30 towns and villages in Kherson region have been flooded, supply of freshwater and electricity have been disrupted. In addition the region is under constant shelling by the russian army.

G7 leaders pledge billions of aid to Ukraine with one hand, and continue zealously buying Russian fossil fuels with the other. The geopolitical landscape is now more than ever under the control of natural gas. The G7 Hiroshima Summit, which took place from May 19th to 21st, has only further confirmed that the worldwide addiction to fossil gas is the most challenging to eradicate on a global scale.

On the anniversary of Russia's fossil-fueled invasion of Ukraine, which is trying to destroy the democratic system in the world and disrupt the development of renewable energy sources, provoking significant energy poverty and further exposing most vulnerable people to adverse impacts of climate change, Razom We Stand launched in Ukraine Re-energy Network.

The annual Earth Day, a celebration of the beginning of the modern environmental movement, is taking place this Saturday 22 April, 2023. This year it goes under the theme “Invest in Our Planet” and is calling for mobilization of public and private capital for investments in renewables. Using this opportunity we join our voice and call on the US and G7 to support deployment of decentralized renewable energy solutions in Ukraine as part of emergency aid.

The annual G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment is this coming weekend, and climate experts are watching with concern. Especially problematic is Japan’s toxic new so-called “Green Transformation (GX)” policy, which is soaked in fossil fuels. Such worrying proposals put out by Japan as G7 President are clashing with messages from civil society leaders, who are calling for action.

Little known but very concerning is the fact that in 2022 Russian liquified natural gas production grew by 8% and Russia, contrary to the sanctions, has expanded shipments of LNG to Europe and is building another LNG terminal in the Arctic. And this in part is facilitated by western firms. Russia is still exporting 10 TWh to 15 TWh per month of LNG to the EU. This is not subject to sanctions but could be cut unilaterally by Russia any time.

Today is our last day in Houston, Texas, at CERAWeek, the global energy conference described by Bill McKibben this week as the hydrocarbon world’s biggest festival, a Davos for carbon energy executives. Here are our action highlights from the week.

While CERAWeek 2023 has the motto: "Navigating a Turbulent World: Energy, Climate and Security", nowhere is it mentioned in the agenda that actually energy self-reliance, based on decentralized clean energy, is the best way for a country to achieve energy security. 

The oil cap for Russian oil is not working: compliance is not enforced, sanctions are violated, and Russia still earns approximately 560 million euros daily from fossil fuel exports, with the European shipping industry still being the primary source of this income. There is no other way to stop the war: a full embargo on Russian oil and gas is needed, now.

Razom We Stand is now well-established as the main voice against fossil fuel dictators and war profiteers. This piece builds on our earlier article that focused on our organization’s work in the framework of the UN Climate Summit COP27 and the green transition of Ukraine. 

In the first days of the horrific russian invasion of Ukraine, Svitlana Romanko, Ukrainian environmental lawyer and climate campaigner, was driven to establish the Stand With Ukraine campaign on March 4, 2022. 

Razom We Stand shares universal grave concerns of climate activists and civil society over the decision by UN to grant the presidency over the next UNFCCC climate change conference COP28 in UAE to sultan Al Jaber, the head of the world’s 12th largest oil producer - Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

On December 5, the EU and G7 put into effect a price cap on oil exports from Russia, according to which a barrel of Russian oil should be traded at no more than $60, and the sea transportation of crude oil to the EU is prohibited. Because of this, Russia's revenues from fossil fuel exports in December fell to the lowest level since the beginning of the full-scale invasion - by 17%. 

The chain of events that has brought the world to its perilous state today with escalating climate crisis, energy poverty, rise of petro-dictators and autocracies and the collapse of the international rules-based order, signaled by the invasion of Ukraine, have started back in the 1990-ies with very bad choices to make profits on Russian oil and gas, irrespective of moral consequences.

The expert discussion that took place during UN climate change conference COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, where Ukraine was represented by its pavilion for the first time, showed possible ways of Ukraine's economic recovery that would contribute to the decarbonization of Europe, provide energy security and mitigate the effects of climate change. 

Svitlana Romanko comments to The Guardian: EU exports of Russian LNG has risen 46% year-year-on year in the first nine months of 2022, according to European Commission figures, the EU needs to step-up, act more globally and ban all fossil fuels and insurance. We also demand that US institutions divest the billions they have invested in Russia’s carbon bombs.
